My Year of Prakash Raj

Some people spend a year
cooking Julia Child's recipes, or following all of the rules in the Bible, or reading books by people who spent a year doing something. My quest is to watch the 200-some films of South Indian character-actor-extraordinaire, Prakash Raj. (It'll probably take more than a year... and I'll post about some Prakash-less films here as well.)

Strategizing!

I'm approaching the "100 films watched mark" (6 more to go as of today!), which means I'm about 35-40% of the way through Prakash Raj's existing filmography. Late in April I was feeling so proud that I'd watched three Prakash Raj movies in a weekend, and then realized that Prakash Raj was in 3 movies that had released that weekend. Sigh.

So I've realized that this is going to be a long haul, and it's quite possible that Prakash Raj's rate of movie-making may outpace my rate of movie-watching. I need some strategies to start working through the next 100, and to give myself some goals. Here are some tactics I've considered:

  • starting with the oldest movies, and working my way forward.
  • picking a year and trying to knock out all of the films released that year.
  • going with a language, and trying to knock off all of the movies in that language. (Probably start with Malayalam or Kannada.)
  • doing it by hero (for instance, watching all of the Ravi Teja movies that Prakash Raj has been in.)
What sounds interesting?  Any other suggestions?
I promise not to smoke while strategizing all of this...

  1. Vat to do!? Firstly, I would rename this blog, "My years of Prakash Raj, formerly known as My Year of Prakash Raj" since it's a more awkward naam and matches the labor level of the project. Perhaps even something like, "My life with Prakash Raj" would be a nice fit too. Secondly, I believe that a detailed excel spreadsheet should be added and accessible to the public to scan, on which you could show progress with the filmography based in all areas you mentioned above: chronologically, linguistically, year based, and herocentrically. Then, what could be done would be to alternate between viewing them categories. It's so rare that I'm asked for advice that I can hardly contain myself! Finally, I would recommend doing a vision board (sometimes called a dream board) and put your project dreams there, all the while trying to visualized WWPD/VVPD (What Would Prakashji Do?/Vat Vould Prakashji Do? ;)

  2. I think the random strategy you've been going with so far has been working well, so why fix it if it ain't broken? :) You'd get tired, I think, of only watching movies in one language (I mean imagine when you get to Telugu) or with just one hero (because you know, you've kinda already covered the heroes you would watch all day without getting tired :P). So randomness zindabad if you ask me :)

If I really had to come up with a strategy though, mine would be: all the movies with a mustache; then all the movies with a beard (are there any?); then all the movies with glasses, etc. Of course, that will turn out to be very broad still, so myeah... no other ideas I'm afraid :( Randomness still wins.

  3. @sita-ji: Excellent suggestion on the spreadsheet, I'm updating it and will post it on google docs as soon as it's ready. A dream-database, if you will.

@dolce and namak- I think I'll have to add a facial hair column to the list. He sports a beard in Rajakumarudu, and another early film. I'll find pics...

  4. I'm more inclined to get a list and put all his film on a spreadsheet since there are bound to be ones that aren't accessible and ones that are but like dolce and namak suggested take it as it goes. Your randomness is just as much part of the journey.

    All the best!
